SUIT CARE

A good suit does not necessarily have an
expiry date or a certain age where it cannot
be used. Here at Gulati, we hand-select all
our fabrics taking into consideration the
strength and durability of the fabric, that
ensures a long lasting suit if it is cared
for and worn properly. Here are some tips on
how you can prolong the life of your suit to
keep it from showing its age.
1. Try to avoid wearing your suit on
consecutive days. A suit requires at least
24 hours to ‘breathe’ between wears.
2. After each wear hang your suit in a
well-ventilated area. Letting air circulate
allows moisture to dissipate so the wool
fibers spring back into shape. Crumpling a
suit changes the fall of the fibers that may
affect the shape and fit of the suit.
3. Hang your jacket on a sturdy, wishbone
shaped wooden hanger, like the one we give
you. This will allow the fabric to stay
crease free.
4. Hang your trousers separately, upside
down, from a hanger with a flat, wooden
clip. Do not fold them over a hanger bar
because that will cause creasing.
5. Brush your suit frequently with a clothes
brush to remove dust and surface lint that
collects between the fibers. This keeps your
suit looking fresh and new. Soft bristles
are best for jackets; short, stiff bristles
are better for trousers as they tend to
accumulate more dust.
6. If your suit is dark colored wool, spot
clean minor water-based stains using a
sponge, lightly dampened with warm or cool
water. Follow with gentle blotting, using
the same sponge. For an oil-based stain use
a petroleum-based solvent carefully and only
a small amount of it. Several light
applications are better than dousing. If the
suit is a light color or made of cotton or
linen it is best to ask your dry cleaner to
take care of any spot cleaning, as these
fabrics are more delicate.
7. Except in the case of large spills and
hard or prolonged use, suits don’t need much
dry cleaning. Dry cleaning chemicals can
literally take the life out of wool suits,
cause minor shrinkage and discolorations,
and break down any fusing there might be. If
you must dry clean, use a dry cleaner with
on-premises equipment, including hand –steam
ironing. Ask your dry cleaner to use a cold
chemical solvent to reduce the risks of
damage to your suit.
8. Give jackets and trousers breathing space
in your wardrobe, so air can constantly
circulate between them and try to rotate the
wear of suits as much as possible.
9. If you need to remove stubborn wrinkles
take your suit to a dry cleaner for pressing
and ask for hand steam ironing. Over
pressing with a steaming machine can destroy
the suit’s built-in shape and lead to the
fibers being cooked, turning your suit
shiny.
10. Because trousers wear out faster than a
jacket buy another pair of identical
trousers with your suit. This will extend
the life of the suit. We only recommend you
use a professional dry cleaning service if
required. This ensures that the suit is
taken care of with professional care. |
